FolderTube for Chrome: Installation and Setup Guide

FolderTube is a Chrome extension that adds folder organization to YouTube subscriptions. This guide walks through installing it on Google Chrome and getting your subscriptions sorted in under five minutes.

If you are on a Chromium-based browser other than Chrome (Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc, Vivaldi), the installation works similarly โ€” the linked browser-specific guides at the bottom cover the small differences.

Before you install

You need:

  • Google Chrome on desktop (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
  • A YouTube account that you are signed in to.
  • Two minutes.

Install FolderTube on Chrome

  1. Open the FolderTube listing on the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Click 'Add to Chrome'.
  3. Confirm the permissions in the dialog Chrome shows you. FolderTube needs access to YouTube to render the sidebar and store your folder structure locally.
  4. The extension installs and is now visible in Chrome's toolbar (the puzzle-piece icon will list it). Pin it if you want quick access โ€” it is also accessible directly from YouTube.

Set up FolderTube on YouTube

Once installed, the setup happens entirely on YouTube. Five steps:

  1. Open youtube.com and sign in if you are not already.
  2. Click the purple FolderTube button in the top-right of the YouTube page. This opens the FolderTube sidebar.
  3. Press the sync subscriptions button. FolderTube imports every channel you are subscribed to.
  4. Create folders for the categories you want โ€” Tech, Music, Cooking, anything. You can create as many top-level folders as you want on the free plan.
  5. Drag channels from the sidebar into your folders. A channel can live in multiple folders if you want.

When you visit YouTube's Subscriptions page, you will now see a folder filter that lets you view one folder at a time instead of the full feed.

Add real folders to YouTube

FolderTube is free to install. Drag your subscriptions into folders and finally find what you actually want to watch.

Common Chrome setup issues

The purple button does not appear

Refresh youtube.com after installing. If it still does not appear, check that the extension is enabled in chrome://extensions and that no other YouTube-modifying extension is blocking it.

Sync does not pull all my subscriptions

Make sure you are signed in to the right Google account. The sync uses the account currently signed in to YouTube, not the Google account signed in to Chrome.

Folder data does not show on a different computer

By default, folder data is stored locally to the Chrome profile. For cross-device sync, see the guide to syncing FolderTube across devices.

Pricing on Chrome

FolderTube is free to install. The free plan includes unlimited top-level folders, 30 Mark-as-Watched videos per month, and 3 channel-video searches per day. Premium adds subfolders, custom colors, unlimited Mark as Watched, and unlimited channel video search โ€” $2.99/month, $19/year, or $39 lifetime.

For browser-specific guides, see FolderTube for Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc, or Vivaldi. For the broader guide to organizing once installed, see the complete guide to organizing YouTube subscriptions.
