How to Organize News YouTube Channels into Folders

News on YouTube has two faces. The first is fast โ€” daily briefings, headline channels, breaking-news clips you want in the first scroll. The second is slow โ€” long-form analysis, documentaries, deep dives you save for a weekend. A flat Subscriptions feed treats both the same and you end up either drowning in headlines or missing them entirely.

Folders separate the two without making you unsubscribe from either. This guide walks through the news-specific structures that work and how to set them up.

Why news subscriptions overwhelm a flat feed

News channels publish on very different cadences. A daily-headlines channel might post 5 videos a day. A long-form analysis channel might post once a week. In a single feed, the high-frequency channels bury everything else.

Splitting by cadence and format restores balance โ€” you can scan headlines in one folder and reserve the deep-dive folder for when you actually have 40 minutes.

Three folder structures that work for news

By region

World, US / National, Regional / Local, Country-specific (UK, Japan, etc.). Useful when your interests cross borders and you want to scan a single region at a time.

By format

Daily Briefings (under 10 min), Analysis (10โ€“30 min), Long-Form / Documentaries (30 min+), Live & Press Conferences. The strongest split for most people โ€” matches the time you actually have.

By perspective

Mainstream, Independent, International, Niche / Specialist. Useful when you deliberately read across viewpoints and want to be able to check each silo separately.

A sample setup

If you want a starting point, this four-folder layout covers most news viewers:

  • Daily โ€” short briefings, headline channels, anything you scan during morning coffee
  • Analysis โ€” mid-form explainers, weekly recaps, political analysis
  • Long-Form โ€” documentaries, full interviews, investigative pieces
  • Tech / Business / [your beat] โ€” sector-specific channels if you follow a beat

Set it up in FolderTube

  1. Install FolderTube from the Chrome Web Store.
  2. Open YouTube and click the purple FolderTube button to open the sidebar.
  3. Press the sync button to import every channel you follow.
  4. Create your news folders and drag channels in. High-frequency channels go in 'Daily', longer-form channels go in 'Analysis' or 'Long-Form'.
  5. Open the Subscriptions page and filter by folder โ€” start with Daily in the morning, Analysis at lunch, Long-Form on weekends.

Tame the firehose with Mark as Watched

News channels generate a lot of thumbnails. Use FolderTube's Mark as Watched control to flag headlines you have already absorbed โ€” they grey out on your next visit so you only scan what is new.

Avoid the doomscroll folder

If a folder consistently makes you feel worse and you never feel informed by it, it is a signal to unsubscribe from some of its channels โ€” not to add another folder.
